Airtel’s New Ploy to Rival Reliance Jio 4G Is No Good

Airtel’s New Ploy to Rival Reliance Jio 4G Is No Good

Amid the ongoing tariff war triggered by the entry of Reliance Jio, India's largest mobile operator Bharti Airtel on Friday announced a special 90-day pack that offers unlimited data – 30 GB at 4G speed – for Rs 1,495.

While Airtel claims to match Jio's Rs 50 per GB, but the FUP conditions, along with throttling down post-FUP speeds to 2G, doesn't actually sound quite attractive.

When you consider that 30 GB of data is spread over 90 days, what are the chances that the user will exhaust their data pack much before the time frame given by Airtel? Very high.

The pack announced will cost Rs 1,495 for existing users in Delhi and Mumbai, while new users can avail it by paying Rs 1,494. Another point worth noting here is that the plan will only work on 4G-enabled handsets.

This is Airtel's latest move to counter the launch of Reliance Jio 4G in India. Last month, Airtel had introduced another pack amounting to similar figure, which apparently offered Rs 51 per GB. But asking consumers to pay Rs 1500 upfront isn't economically ideal for a market, where the average revenue per user is less than Rs 200.

Reliance Jio 4G is available to all users in the form of Jio Welcome Offer which lasts up to 31 December 2016, after which consumers will have to choose plans starting from Rs 149 to avail their services.

We are not trying to hold Jio in high light by discarding yet another Airtel 4G plan. After all, Reliance isn't being totally honest with its own claims of Rs 51 per GB data 4G plan.
