Apple is looking to leverage artificial intelligence in a bid to overcome a major pain point for iPhone users: the life of its battery.

Many iPhone users have often complained that its battery drains “crazily” faster than those of other flagship phones such as Google Pixel and Samsung, especially on long calls or usage of apps such as Maps. However, Apple is working to change that with the iOS 19 update.

AI-Powered Battery-Saving Feature In Apple iPhones

According to a Bloomberg story by tech insider Mark Gurman, Apple’s iOS 19 release may include an AI-powered battery-saving function. As per the report, the battery management tool would optimise the iPhone’s power consumption according to usage patterns.

Citing people who’re aware of the development, Gurman wrote that Apple “is planning an AI-powered battery management mode for iOS 19, an iPhone software update due in September.” He added that the feature will “analyse how a person uses their device and make adjustments to conserve energy.”

Notably, Apple late last year had also announced another AI-powered battery feature with iOS 18.2. Called Battery Intelligence, it would give users a notification about the estimated charging time for their iPhone. However, it appears the feature isn’t completely available yet, and will only arrive with iOS 19. It will feature a lock screen indicator that indicates how long it will take for your phone to fully charge.

Apple’s AI Battery Management: Preparing For Thinner iPhone

Apple is primarily introducing AI battery management for the forthcoming iPhone 17 series, in which the purported iPhone 17 Air is anticipated to be the company’s thinnest phone to date. Because of its thin design, which will likely result in a smaller battery, battery conservation will become critical unlike ever before. According to Gurman, the AI battery tool will be accessible for all iPhone models running iOS 19, and not just the iPhone 17.

While AI-powered battery features might be new to iPhones, Android already has certain capabilities. Google claims that its machine learning-powered Adaptive Battery, which was first available for Android in 2018, analyses the phone’s usage habits to identify which apps should be prioritised and which should not run in the background.
