30 FPS 'Unplayable': Grand Theft Auto 6 Frame Rate On PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X Draws Fans' Ire

However, the frame rate will likely be locked at 30fps (meaning it won't go below that threshold), and some fans were more accepting of that.

A new technical specification for Grand Theft Auto VI has left fans unimpressed and disappointed, and they're not holding it back in showing it.

GTA 6, the highly anticipated release from Rockstar Games, may run at 30 frames per second on modern consoles, according to a new technical report by Digital Foundry.

GTA 6 To Run At 30 FPS

Digital Foundry thinks that GTA 6 probably won't run at any speed higher than 30 fps on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X, as per information collected from its most recent trailers.

"You could certainly imagine a world where Rockstar adds in a 60fps mode that still runs at 30fps during cutscenes to keep fidelity high, but it's hard to imagine a 60fps mode that also includes the RTGI and RT reflections that lends the game world its realistic look," said Digital Foundry's Will Judd.

“At that point, the game world would look so dramatically different — and require so much additional work to recreate the lighting and reflections using rasterised techniques — that it scarcely seems believable," Judd added.

The new finding echoes past sentiments on the frame rate of GTA 6. Notably, former Rockstar developer Mike York of Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA 5 fame had earlier claimed that GTA 6 might only launch on consoles at 30fps.

Fans Slam GTA 6 Frame Rate

Fans aren't mincing words regarding the frame rate for GTA 6, which feels like a thing of the past.

"Big sad. Gonna be playing a triple A game in 2026 at 30fps. Wow, feels like 2013 again," said one user on Reddit. "There better be a performance mode, or I won't be buying it 'till it releases on PC," chimed Dacoleman1. "30fps is unplayable".

Another fan, VienneseDude, remarked: "Disappointment. I understand there are technical limitations but 30fps just isn't satisfying in fast paced games".

"40fps is the minimum for a smooth experience, especially when you are used to 60+ fps. RDR2 on console is unplayable even hours into the game," yet another user said.

However, the frame rate will likely be locked at 30fps (meaning it won't go below that threshold), and some fans were more accepting of that.

"30 fps is totally playable … as long as it's consistent and it doesn't drop under 25 i can live with it," said one.
