Chennai Super Kings have signed Australian left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson as a replacement for Nathan Ellis ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 season, the franchise confirmed on Tuesday.
The move adds to a growing trend this season, with Johnson becoming the third player to withdraw from the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and link up with an IPL franchise.
Late Reinforcements Ahead Of Opener
Johnson joins CSK for Rs 1.5 crore, with the announcement coming just six days before their opening match against Rajasthan Royals on March 30.
Ellis has been ruled out of the entire tournament due to a hamstring injury sustained while playing in the Australian domestic one-day final on March 11. The injury, a recurrence of an earlier issue that also affected his Big Bash League campaign with Hobart Hurricanes, requires at least three months of rehabilitation.

His absence is a setback for CSK, who had retained him to lead their death-overs attack following Matheesha Pathirana's move to Kolkata Knight Riders.
PSL Exit Raises Questions
Johnson's arrival has drawn attention due to the timing of his availability. The 30-year-old had withdrawn from the PSL just days earlier, pulling out of his contract with Quetta Gladiators on March 15, citing personal reasons.
His subsequent signing with CSK has fuelled speculation around player priorities, particularly with the IPL and PSL schedules overlapping for the second season in a row. Johnson is now the third such case after Blessing Muzarabani and Dasun Shanaka made similar switches.
Tactical Shift For CSK
CSK's decision to bring in Johnson reflects a shift in their pace strategy. Unlike Ellis, who is known for his control at the death, Johnson offers left-arm pace in excess of 145 kmph, and the ability to extract bounce. He is expected to trouble batters in the Powerplay and middle overs rather than as a specialist finisher.
Johnson also comes with some limited IPL experience, having played nine matches across stints with Gujarat Titans (2024) and Kolkata Knight Riders (2025), taking five wickets.
He has also featured in eight T20Is for Australia but has had limited game time in recent months due to injury setbacks that ruled him out of the T20 World Cup.
