A viral ESPN FC post has sent the football world into disbelief, claiming a resale ticket for Portugal versus Colombia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Miami is listed at a staggering $11 million. While the figure sounds absurd, it is not entirely fabricated with the reason behind that eye-watering price lying in FIFA's newly adapted ticketing sales method.

The ticket in question has appeared on FIFA's official resale portal, where unusual prices began appearing after the “Last-Minute Sales Phase” opened on April 1. Match 71 featuring Portugal against Colombia at the Hard Rock Stadium on June 27, is a genuine, high-demand fixture, driven by Cristiano Ronaldo's global pull and a strong Colombian fanbase in Florida.

However, the $11 million price tag is not an official valuation. It is widely understood to be either a technical glitch or a deliberate “troll” listing.

How Did It Get This Far?

The answer lies in how FIFA has restructured ticket sales for 2026, and why it is drawing scrutiny.

For matches in the United States, FIFA's resale platform allows uncapped pricing. Unlike Mexico, where resale values are restricted to face value, sellers in the US can input any number. That means someone can theoretically list a ticket for $11 million and the system will accept it.

Compounding this is FIFA's adoption of dynamic pricing. For the first time at a World Cup, ticket prices fluctuate based on demand, search traffic, and availability. For a marquee game like Portugal versus Colombia, Category 1 tickets have already surged to around $11,000, a record high and nearly 10 times the 2022 final price.

This creates a distorted pricing environment. When five-figure “official” prices meet an uncapped resale system, exaggerated listings become inevitable.

FIFA have also been dealing with technical issues in their ticketing process. On April 1, server overloads led to database inconsistencies, with some listings displaying incorrect or placeholder values. In several cases, outdated or corrupted listings appeared on the public interface, further fuelling confusion.

The Verdict

Is a ticket actually worth $11 million? No. There is no evidence of any sale remotely close to that figure with resale listings typically peaking below $1 million.

But the fact that such a number can exist, even as a glitch or joke, points to a broader issue. FIFA's shift toward dynamic pricing and uncapped resale, particularly in the US market, has blurred the line between official value and speculative chaos.
