NASA is preparing to launch Artemis II, the first crewed mission to the moon in more than 50 years. The mission is set to lift off as soon as April 1, as per a blog post, with four astronauts flying around the moon and returning to Earth over a 10-day journey.

Meet The Artemis II Crew

  • Reid Wiseman - Commander
  • Victor Glover - Pilot
  • Christina Koch - Mission Specialist
  • Jeremy Hansen - Mission Specialist

"It is a test mission and we are ready for every scenario...It's going to be amazing," Reid Wiseman said, as per the BBC.

This mission will feature several firsts: Victor Glover will be the first Black astronaut to reach the moon, Christina Koch the first woman, and Jeremy Hansen, a Canadian, the first non-American.

What The Artemis II Mission Will Do

Artemis II is primarily a test flight to ensure the spacecraft, crew, and mission systems can handle a journey around the moon. The mission will begin with a Space Launch System rocket launch from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It will send the Orion spacecraft into space. The astronauts will fly past the moon, including its far side, and return to Earth.

During the mission, Orion will perform a trans-lunar burn, a controlled propulsion manoeuvre that sets the spacecraft on a precise path to fly around the moon. For about 40 minutes, the crew will be out of communication with Earth while passing behind the moon. This journey is expected to break the record for the farthest distance from Earth ever reached by humans.

Priorities Of The Artemis II Mission

  • NASA has outlined five main priorities for Artemis II:
  • Testing the crew's ability to operate in deep space.
  • Assessing spacecraft systems.
  • Ensuring emergency protocols work.
  • Collecting data on the moon and space.
  • Demonstrating that humans can safely make the journey.

Can The Artemis II Mission Be Watched?

NASA will provide a 24/7 livestream from the Kennedy Space Center on YouTube.

After the launch, the new Artemis Real-time Orbit Website (AROW) will allow the public to track Orion's distance from Earth and its position around the moon. This way, people everywhere will be able to follow the mission in real time.

Future Of The Artemis Programme

NASA says, following Artemis II:

  • Artemis III (2027) will test Orion with commercial lunar landers in low Earth orbit.
  • Artemis IV will be the first human moon landing since 1972.
  • Artemis V will focus on building permanent lunar infrastructure.
  • Cost Of The Artemis II Mission

The Artemis programme is one of NASA's most expensive and ambitious projects. By 2025, over $55 billion had reportedly been spent on the SLS, Orion, and ground systems, as per an audit by NASA's Office of Inspector General.

Budget overruns have added an additional $7 billion, as per a July 2025 report by the Government Accountability Office.
