Farmers marching towards Delhi as part of the Bharatiya Kisan Union's protest call over demands ranging from farm loan waiver to cut in fuel prices, were stopped at the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border on Tuesday, with police using water cannons to disperse them.
The ‘Kisan Kranti Padyatra’ that started on 23 September ended at Delhi’s Kisan Ghat
Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury and SP’s Akhilesh Yadav expressed solidarity with the protesting farmers
The Delhi police issued a statement saying the protesters turned violent despite requesting them to wait for the outcome of talks with the ministers
The demands raised by farmers are implementation of the MS Swaminathan Commission report, farm loan waiver, free electricity to farmers and allowing power connections to farmers to run tubewells
This (the BJP-led) government has not fulfilled the promises it made to farmers, so it is all but natural that farmers would protest. It is unfortunate and we fully support the farmers.
The rally was proceeding in a disciplined manner. If we don’t tell our government about our problems then whom do we tell? Do we go to Pakistan or Bangladesh?
“Instead of providing relief to farmers, they are exasperating the crisis further, forcing farmers to be under debt burden and distress suicides. We haven’t seen such an agrarian distress in India since independence [sic].”

“We held discussions with representatives of Bharatiya Kisan Union last night. Another meeting was held at Home Minister's house this morning. In the end, we reached agreements on some issues and they assured us that the agitation will be called off, “ he said.
Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Tuesday termed the police lathi-charge on agitating farmers the "height" of anarchy and warned that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party should be prepared to bear its consequences.

"The BJP, which came to power promising to bring the good days of the farmers' by doubling their income, has targeted them with tear-gas shells, lathis when they only wanted to march to the Gandhi sthal on Gandhi Jayanti and hold protest demonstration over their problems" the Dalit leader said.

"The farmers remained unfazed despite all the hardships. We have been marching for 12 days now, farmers are tired as well. We will continue to demand our rights to the government but for now we are ending the march," Tikait told IANS at Kisan Ghat.
He said the farmers will be returning early morning on Wednesday.
