Holi-daying: Japan, Dubai, Thailand Top Picks During Festival Of Colours

Indians are packing their bags, colours and a whole lot of festive spirit because this Holi, the celebration is not stopping at home as the occasion coincides with a long weekend.

This year, 21% of Holi-related visa applications are from Indian families and groups heading abroad, according to data from digital visa platform Atlys.

International departures are booming. Japan, Thailand and Dubai are top picks for Indian travellers this season, accounting for 21% of Holi-related visa applications, primarily from Indian families and groups.

Compared to last year, family travel during Holi has surged 27%, proving that a splash of holiday vibes pairs perfectly with some actual holidaying.

India is not just sending travellers out, it is also welcoming them. In March, 13.2% of inbound visa applications are from international tourists eager to dive into the colourful chaos, marking an 18% year-on-year growth in Holi tourism.

Delhi is the top landing spot, with many heading further into Rajasthan, lured by Pushkar's iconic celebrations. Many visitors are extending their trips, using Holi as the perfect excuse to explore India's cultural and geographical wonders.

"Holi's timing this year has created the perfect scenario for travellers to blend cultural celebration with exploration," Mohak Nahta, chief executive officer of Atlys, said.

"We're seeing a fascinating mix, some applicants want to experience the magic of Holi in India's historic cities, while others are taking the festival's vibrant spirit abroad. This shift highlights how people are reimagining traditions, merging them with global adventures," Nahta said.

The data also highlights a broader trend with 55% of Holi travel applications span four to seven days, showcasing the rise of festival-linked tourism. Travellers are increasingly merging consecutive holidays with weekend breaks, creating immersive experiences that celebrate Holi's spirit of togetherness and joy.
