Scottish Virus Deaths Jump as Medic Warns Normality Months Away

(Bloomberg) --

Fatalities in Scotland from coronavirus climbed overnight and the country's chief medical officer warned that it's likely to be “many months” before life starts returning to normal.

The death toll rose to 172 from 126 a day earlier, with the number of confirmed cases climbing to 3,001 and from 2,602.

“Do not think this will be over soon,” Scottish Chief Medical Officer Catherine Calderwood told reporters in Edinburgh on Friday. “What we are looking for is a slowing in the rate of people being confirmed as infected with the virus and we are just not seeing that.”

Calderwood and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon dismissed reports suggesting that Scotland could see a peak in cases within the next week or two.
