Scotland’s Lockdown Likely to Remain as U.K. Review Date Looms

(Bloomberg) --

Scotland is likely to face an extension to the restrictions on movement when the current lockdown is reviewed on May 7, as the country continues its efforts to combat the spread of the coronavirus outbreak.

“It may well be too early even by this time next week to reduce the current restrictions in any meaningful way,” First Minister Nicola Sturgeon told reporters at her daily briefing in Edinburgh on Thursday. Scotland, along with the leaders of the other U.K. nations, is due to assess the restrictions at the end of next week.

More than 11,000 people have so far tested positive for Covid-19 in Scotland, with 1,475 confirmed as having died from the virus. Separate figures, which include deaths that are suspected of being related to the illness, show the number of fatalities at more than 2,270.
