(Bloomberg) --

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said the initial phase of the easing of confinement measures imposed because of the coronavirus outbreak has been “positive.”

  • While there is some concern about the recent evolution of the outbreak in Lisbon and the Tagus valley, the situation in the rest of the country has been positive, Rebelo de Sousa told reporters after attending a presentation on the latest data about the pandemic.
  • Portugal started easing confinement measures on May 4 and plans to further ease restrictions on June 1.
  • The government reported 304 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, mostly in the Lisbon region. It's the biggest daily increase since May 8 and takes the total to 31,596. The number of cases in intensive care units fell for a 12th day.
