(Bloomberg) -- A man who claimed to have explosives in his truck near the U.S. Capitol surrendered to police Thursday after an hours-long standoff, authorities said.
Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger said the man, identified as Floyd Ray Roseberry, 49, of North Carolina, gave up without incident.
The pickup truck that he had parked on the sidewalk near the Library of Congress was searched. Capitol Police said no explosive device was found “but possible bomb making materials were collected from the truck.”
Manger said authorities were still trying to determine the motive for the threat. He said there is no indication that anyone else was involved.
Most lawmakers are not in Washington because Congress is on recess, but many staff members and others are working in the Capitol complex and some offices nearby were evacuated.
Security officials at the Capitol, as well as federal agencies and Washington, D.C.-area police departments, have been on heightened alert because of the approaching anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and conspiracy theories circulating on the internet related to former President Donald Trump's false claims about the 2020 presidential election.
