Madagascar Ex-Presidents Take Early Lead as Vote Tally Begins

(Bloomberg) -- Two former presidents took an early lead in Madagascar's elections as counting got under way after Wednesday's ballot.

Andry Rajoelina, 44, and Marc Ravalomanana, 68, each garnered about 43 percent of the vote with less than 1 percent of total ballots counted, according to a statement published by the electoral commission Thursday in the capital, Antananarivo. Hery Rajaonarimampianina, 60, who resigned as president in September to take part in the election, trailed with less than 3 percent of the vote, it said.
