(Bloomberg) -- Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg underwent a “minimally invasive,” non-surgical procedure to address an issue with a stent in her bile duct and is recovering in a New York City hospital, the U.S. Supreme Court said.
The court, citing her doctors, described the procedure, performed Wednesday, as a common one done to minimize the risk of future infection. Ginsburg, 87, was hospitalized earlier this month to clean out the stent, which was placed last year when she was being treated for a malignant tumor on her pancreas.
“The justice is resting comfortably and expects to be released from the hospital by the end of the week,” the court said.
The liberal justice has had a series of recent health issues. She disclosed this month that she was diagnosed in February with a fifth bout of cancer, this time lesions on her liver. She said in a July 17 statement that chemotherapy was yielding “positive results” and that her latest scan showed a significant reduction in lesions and no new disease.
The latest procedure was performed at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, where the stent was placed in August 2019. The court said the so-called stent revision was performed with endoscopy and medical imaging guidance.
