In a major relief for Employees Provident Fund Organisation members, they can now modify their Aadhaar-linked Universal Account Number details, without having to submit supporting documents. This change is expected to reduce the time required for profile updates.

Earlier, EPF members had to seek approval from employers to update personal details in their UAN profiles, which often resulted in delays of up to 28 days.

Now, members can update various personal details without uploading any documents, provided their UAN has already been validated through Aadhaar. These personal details include name, date of birth, gender, nationality, parent's name, marital status, spouse's name, date of joining and date of leaving.

Is Employer Approval Required To Update EPFO Account?

Employer certification is no longer a prerequisite for most profile updates. The EPFO in a press release in January stated, “Out of the total 8 lakh requests received at EPFO for correction through employers in FY2024-25, almost 45% of the change requests can be self-approved by the member without the employer's verification or approval at EPFO. On average, this will eliminate a delay of nearly 28 days taken by the employer to approve Joint Declarations.”

However, in cases where the UAN was issued before Oct. 1, 2017, employer approval may still be required.

Members need to ensure their Aadhaar and PAN are linked to their EPF account. Discrepancies between these records can lead to delays in processing updates or withdrawals.

Understanding UAN

The Universal Account Number is a unique 12-digit identifier assigned by the EPFO to manage an individual's provident fund accounts across multiple employers. UAN activation and linking bank account with Aadhaar are mandatory to access benefits under the Employment Linked Incentive Scheme.

The EPFO emphasised the importance of this linkage, stating on its official X handle, “It is mandatory to seed your Aadhaar with your bank account to avail the benefits of the Employment Linked Incentive Scheme, an employment-centric scheme focusing on job creation in the country. Do it timely to avoid last-minute hassle!”
