Deadline To Migrate From NPS to UPS Extended Till Sept. 30 — Follow These Steps To Switch

The deadline to migrate from Unified Pension Scheme to National Pension Scheme has been extended for the central government employees till Sept. 30, 2025. The earlier deadline was scheduled to lapse on June 30.

All central government employees who are looking to migrate to UPS from NPS need to complete the process through an online application process.

Both the NPS and UPS offer retirement benefits, but they differ in structure, flexibility and pension payouts. While the NPS is a contributory scheme, the UPS offers a guaranteed fixed pension and a lump sum amount on retirement. This new pension scheme came into effect on April 1, 2025.

Under the UPS, a government employee with 25 years of service will get a monthly pension of 50% of the average basic salary of 12 months before retirement. The scheme guarantees a minimum pension of Rs 10,000 per month for employees with at least 10 years of completed service.

“In view of the representations received from various stakeholders requesting an extension of the cut-off date, the Government of India has decided to extend the cut-off date for exercising the option for UPS by three months i.e., upto 30th September 2025 for eligible existing employees, past retirees, and the legally wedded spouses of deceased past retirees,” stated an official released dated June 23.

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to switch from NPS to UPS:

1. Go to the official website of the National Pension System, https://enps.nsdl.com.
2. Click on NPS to UPS migration under the Unified Pension Scheme menu.
3. Enter your Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN) and date of birth.
4. Complete the verification process.
5. An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number or email ID. 
6. Once the process is completed, a confirmation number will be generated and you will get the PDF.
