(Bloomberg) -- Sudanese authorities arrested 17 opposition leaders during fresh protests against President Omar al-Bashir in the capital, Khartoum, and Port Sudan.
Among those detained was Mohamed Youssef al-Mustafa, who heads the Sudanese Professional Association, a coalition of opposition groups in the north African country, the SPA said in a statement. Mariam al-Sadig, the deputy chairman of the National Umma Party, and Sudanese Communist Party Secretary-General Mohammed Muktar al-Khatib were also arrested, it said.
Police used tear gas and arrested dozens of protesters, according to witnesses. Sudan has experienced intermittent unrest since December as discontent mounts against al-Bashir, who seized power in an Islamist-backed coup in 1989, and his economic policies.
