(Bloomberg) -- $500.
That's how much Colgate University agreed to donate to Ohio State's pep and marching band after its members filled in for Colgate's band during a March Madness game.
Playing in its first NCAA tournament since 1996, Colgate drew a first-round matchup against heavily favored Tennessee in Columbus, Ohio. While the school's cheer squad made the 500-mile trip, Colgate chose not to send its pep band. Instead, it reached out to schools in the Columbus area to see if they might have a student band available.
As a result, roughly 30 members of the Ohio State band wore Colgate shirts and played Colgate's fight songs via sheet music. Colgate agreed to cover the cost of busing the students from Ohio State to Nationwide Arena in downtown Columbus, provided a meal to the band, and made the $500 donation, Ohio State said following an open records request.
The setup angered many back at Colgate's campus in Hamilton, New York, including members of the school's actual band, who learned about the fill-ins during cutaway shots on the TV broadcast. Colgate lost 77-70.
