Brexit Is ‘Like Waiting for Godot,’ Frustrated PM Says

(Bloomberg) -- European leaders have likened Theresa May to a Monty Python hero, and the U.K. to a whining cat. Luxembourg's prime minister raised the bar on Thursday when he invoked a Samuel Beckett masterpiece to describe the state of Brexit talks.

“I have got sometimes the feeling that we are in a waiting room, a bit like waiting for Godot,” Xavier Bettel told reporters in Brussels ahead of a crunch summit to discuss stalled negotiations for the U.K.'s exit from the EU. “But Godot never came. So I hope that this time they will come.”

The protagonists in Beckett's bleak “tragicomedy in two acts” spend their time waiting for a character named Godot, who never shows up. The reference adds to signs of increasing exasperation among EU leaders, as eight days before the U.K's schedule exit from the bloc, there's still no sign of a deal that's acceptable to the British Parliament.

“I didn't know my patience could last this long,” European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker told reporters.
