After India pitched the idea, the International Day of Yoga was universally adopted by the United Nations in 2014. Since then, it has been annually observed on June 21 globally as millions of yoga enthusiasts participate in the public events.

June 21 has been chosen as the International Yoga Day as the day marks the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. “This day represents a symbolic harmony between nature and human wellness and is important in many cultures,” the Culture and Tourism Ministry said in a press release.

This year’s theme for International Yoga Day – “Yoga for One Earth, One Health”— emphasises sustainability and global well-being, the ministry added.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the yoga day celebrations from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Over one lakh locations across India have been arranged to host synchronised Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) sessions as part of a nationwide event. Delhi will also be a part of these celebrations on Saturday, organising public yoga events at hundreds of locations.

In 2024, an estimated 240 million people globally participated in International Yoga Day celebrations, according to government figures. This year, participation is expected to surpass last year's numbers.
