IFS officer Nidhi Tewari has been appointed private secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a Personnel Ministry order said. A 2014-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, Tewari is currently serving as deputy secretary in the Prime Minister's Office.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved Tewari's appointment as private secretary on a co-terminus basis, said the order dated March 29.

Tewari, a 2014-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, has been serving as Deputy Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office since Jan. 6, 2023. She initially joined the PMO as Under Secretary in 2022.

Tewari is from Mehmurganj in Varanasi, which is also Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency. She ranked 96th in the Civil Services Examination in 2013. Before clearing the UPSC, she worked as an Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Tax) in Varanasi while preparing for the exam.

Prior to her PMO role, Tewari worked in the Ministry of External Affairs in the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division. Her expertise in international relations led her to handle key responsibilities in the PMO, particularly in the ‘Foreign and Security’ vertical, reporting directly to National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

She managed important areas like External Affairs, Atomic Energy, and Security Affairs, along with overseeing matters related to Rajasthan. She also made contributions to foreign policy during India’s G20 presidency.
