Mumbai and its neighbouring areas received heavy rains on Sunday, bringing down the mercury and providing relief to residents from the hot and humid weather.

An India Meteorological Department official said that the southwest monsoon arrived in the financial capital on Sunday two days ahead of normal schedule due to favourable conditions along the Maharashtra coast.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Tagore Nagar in Vikhroli recorded the highest rainfall of 158.2 mm in just five hours on June 9, from 8 pm to 1 am.

Additionally, various locations reported rainfall ranging from 100 to 150 mm, the civic body said in a post on X.

During these five hours, the city area's average rainfall was 99.11 mm. The eastern suburbs recorded 61.29 mm, while the western suburbs recorded 73.78 mm.

"The entire BMC administration and machinery worked tirelessly to drain the rainwater accumulated in some low-lying areas due to the heavy rains and to keep Mumbai running. As a result, the water receded quickly, and the situation remained under control," the post said.

Road traffic and suburban railways are also running smoothly, the BMC said.

Slab Collapses In Mumbai's Vikhroli Area

A man and a 10-year-old boy were killed after a portion of the slab and parapet of a five-storey under-construction building collapsed in Mumbai, civic officials said on Monday.

The incident took place at Kailas Business Park in Vikhroli area at 11.10 pm on Sunday, a civic official said.

When the fire brigade personnel reached the spot after receiving a call, they found some portion of the parapet and slab had fallen, while some parts of the under-construction building were hanging precariously, the official said.

Before the arrival of the fire brigade, some locals had rushed a 38-old-man and the boy to the Rajawadi Hospital where doctors declared them brought dead, the official said.
