The Indian Railways is testing an automated teller machine (ATM) onboard a Mumbai-Nashik train. The move aims to enhance passenger convenience and explore new ways to offer digital financial services during travel.

The Central Railway division of the Railways has installed an ATM in the Mumbai-Manmad Panchavati Express. The initiative is in an experimental mode at present, for which the trial run was conducted on April 10.

The ATM has been installed in the air-conditioned chair car coach of the daily express service. According to the officials, passengers will be able to use the facility soon.

"The ATM has been installed on board the Panchavati Express on an experimental basis," CR's chief public relations officer Swapnil Nila said on Tuesday.

A video of the onboard ATM is being shared on social media, showing the machine placed in a cubicle between two AC coaches. A pull-down metallic shutter is installed for passenger safety. As seen in the video, the ATM has been provided by the Bank of Maharashtra. CCTV will also be provided for safety measures.

The machine has been installed inside a dedicated cubicle located at the rear end of the coach. This space was previously used as a temporary pantry. It has also been provided with a shutter door to ensure accessibility while the train is in motion, the officials said.

To make the arrangement possible, some coach modifications had to be undertaken. The necessary work was carried out at the Manmad Railway Workshop.

The express service was chosen for this project as it operates daily. The train moved between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai and Manmad Junction in the neighbouring Nashik district. It takes about 4.3 hours to complete a one-way journey of 259 km through this superfast train.

The train is particularly popular among the people due to its punctuality and convenient timing for the journey. It departs from CSMT at 6:15 p.m., aligning well with typical office hours and making it ideal for evening travel. It has a total of nine stops, including Dadar and Kalyan.
