Maharashtra Weather Update: Orange Alert In Dozen Districts; Mumbai, Thane In Yellow Zone Today

A cyclonic circulation is expected to bring hailstorm, gusty winds (50-60 kmph), and thunderstorms in the orange alert districts of Maharashtra today.

About a dozen districts of Maharashtra including Pune and Nasik are on a yellow alert on Wednesday due to a cyclonic circulation over central Maharashtra and its neighbourhood in lower tropospheric levels. Light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning are also expected in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri among other districts, which have been put on a yellow alert by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The cyclonic circulation is expected to bring hailstorms, gusty winds (50-60 kmph), and thunderstorms in the orange alert districts. Most of these districts will remain on a yellow alert on Thursday, anticipating moderate rainfall and strong winds.

Maharashtra Districts On Orange Alert Today:

The orange alert districts include: Pune, Nasik, Amravati, Jalgaon, Satara, Jalna, Beed, Chandrapur, among others.

Meanwhile, the districts on a yellow alert will likely receive: A thunderstorm with lightning, light to moderate rainfall, and gusty winds (30-40 km/h) at isolated places, the IMD said. Some areas of Mumbai received light drizzle on Tuesday. For today, Mumbai is anticipating strong winds and rainfall in several areas.

Maharashtra Districts On Yellow Alert Today

Districts such as Raigad, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, Sangli, Parbhani, Latur, and Akola will remain on a yellow alert on April 2 and 3. Other districts under a yellow alert today are: Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Dhule, Nandurbar, Kolhapur, Sangli, Hingoli, Akola, Latur, Dharashiv, Nagpur, Gadchiroli, Washim, and Wardha. Most of these districts will also remain on a yellow alert on April 3.

On Apr. 4, Maharashtra districts Pune, Dharashiv, Latur, Sholapur, Satara will be on a yellow alert, while the remaining districts are not expected to receive any significant rainfall. However, thunderstorms may continue in isolated places.

Given the situation, the IMD has warned of the possibility of cloud-to-ground lightning at isolated places, weak trees or structures falling due to gusty winds, and localised power disruptions. Expected impact also includes damage to crops, while strong winds and hail could affect plantations and standing crops. Minor damage to kutcha houses, walls, and huts is likely.
