As the tensions between India and Pakistan escalate, Ministry of Defence has said that in these sensitive times, a lot of misinformation and fake news is being spread on WhatsApp. The ministry has urged the public to be cautious and follow their WhatsApp Channel for all authentic information related to the Ministry of Defence.

This is the link to the WhatsApp Channel.

The Press Information Bureau is also running PIB Fact Check operations on social media platforms to bust fake news.

Tensions between India and Pakistan intensified on the night of Friday and early Saturday, with reports streaming in from Jammu & Kashmir, the Line of Control, Rajasthan, and various regions in north India on heavy Pakistani shelling. Meanwhile, social media has seen a surge of misinformation and fabricated content amid the escalating tension between the neighboring countries, following India's Operation Sindoor on May 7.

The PIB's fact-checking team has been actively countering false narratives circulating on various platforms, posting clarifications on X.

Some of these false claims include the Udhampur Air Base Attack. PIB Fact Check posted that a video aired by 'AIK News' on live TV claimed that Pakistan had destroyed the Udhampur Air Base. However, the video is of a fire incident at a chemical factory in Hanumangarh, Rajasthan, unrelated to the current India–Pakistan situation.

Another claim involves a missile strike on New Delhi Airport. An old video is being falsely shared as footage of a missile strike on New Delhi Airport. This video shows a gas station explosion in Aden, Yemen, from August 2024. It has no connection to the current India–Pakistan situation, PIB Fact Check said.

Additionally, there are claims about an Indian female Air Force pilot being captured. Pro-Pakistan social media handles claim that an Indian female Air Force pilot, Squadron Leader Shivani Singh, has been captured in Pakistan. PIB Fact Check clarified that no Indian female Air Force pilot has been captured. These instances highlight the importance of verifying information through reliable sources to avoid falling for misinformation.
