The government is going to launch an annual pass for FASTag soon to make highway travel more convenient for private vehicles.

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday announced the launch of an annual pass for FASTag from Aug. 15. The pass, priced at Rs 3,000, will be valid for one year from the activation date, or up to 200 trips (whichever is earlier).

In a post on X, Gadkari said that this move is aimed at making highway travel easier and more convenient. The pass will be valid only for non-commercial private vehicles such as cars, jeeps and vans. Commercial or heavy vehicles will not be able to use it.

How To Buy FASTag Annual Pass?

"The annual pass will enable seamless and cost-effective travel across National Highways throughout the country. A dedicated link for activation and renewal will soon be made available on the Rajmarg Yatra App as well as on the official websites of NHAI and MoRTH," the Union Minister said.

Gadkari stated that the new policy addresses long-standing issues related to toll plazas situated within a 60 km stretch. The FASTag-based annual pass will simplify toll payments with a single, "affordable" transaction.

"By reducing wait times, easing congestion, and minimising disputes at toll plazas, the annual pass aims to deliver a faster and smoother travel experience for millions of private vehicle owners," the minister noted.

In his post, Gadkari did not clarify what happens to the remaining balance if the 200-trip limit on the annual FASTag pass is reached before the validity period ends.

As Gadkari’s post gained traction, many users have sought a response on some of the details related to the new pass. For instance, one user asked for detailed clarification on what constitutes “one trip” in this annual pass system. "Whether a trip will be measured by distance or defined by entry and exit on a National Highway," the user commented.

Other users also had queries about things like whether the annual pass will work with the existing FASTag or a new pass will have to be generated.

The Road Transport Ministry is expected to release a detailed notification soon, addressing such queries and outlining the complete terms and conditions.
