The latest flight cancellations come as the airline faces intensified scrutiny over aircraft safety following the tragic crash on June 12. An Air India Dreamliner flight from Ahmedabad to London crashed shortly after take-off from runway 23, hitting the hostel building of BJ Medical College.
The aircraft, carrying 242 people and about 1.25 lakh litres of fuel, failed to gain altitude after takeoff. Except for one passenger seated on 11A, all died as the plane exploded shortly after crashing.
According to reports, at least 33 people on the ground also died in the incident, including students who were eating lunch in the hostel mess at that time.
Meanwhile, Air India flight bookings have dropped 30-35% since the Ahmedabad crash, with many travellers uncertain or reconsidering their plans. Travel agencies noted over 20% cancellations in existing Air India flight bookings. The decline is also influenced by the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, according to Madhav Oza, owner of Blue Star Air Travel Services (India) Pvt.
Air India To Reduce Flights On International Routes Till July 15
Additionally, Air India is set to see further scale-back of its international flight operations from June 21. The airline has announced a 15% reduction in international services on widebody aircraft from June 21 to July 15. The move mainly affects the routes towards Europe and North America. In its statement, the airline cited technical issues and airspace restrictions in West Asia as the reason behind the development.
The airline further said that it is deploying extended safety checks for its international flights, which is expected to impact operations and lead to temporary curtailments on some routes.
