Foreign portfolio investors stayed net sellers for the fifth straight session in the cash market on Thursday. They were also net sellers in index futures and options, and in stock futures and options. 

FIIs In Cash Market

Foreign portfolio investors stayed net sellers for the fifth straight session on Thursday and sold stocks worth Rs 7,170.9 crore, according to provisional data from the National Stock Exchange.

Domestic institutional investors stayed buyers for the 17th consecutive session and bought stocks worth Rs 7,639.6 crore, according to provisional data from the National Stock Exchange.

The FPIs sold stocks worth Rs 3,362.2 crore on Wednesday. So far in January 2025, FPIs have sold stakes worth Rs 15,164 crore, according to the National Securities Depository Ltd.

Through 2024, overseas investors have been net sellers and have collectively offloaded stocks worth Rs 7,292.3 crore, according to data from NSDL compiled by NDTV Profit. The DIIs stayed net buyers through the year and bought stocks worth Rs 8,282.8 crore.

However, according to data from the National Securities Depository Ltd., which is updated till the previous trading day, foreign institutions have been net buyers of Rs 3,736.95 crore worth of Indian equities so far in 2024.

FIIs In Futures And Options

Ahead of the Jan. 25 expiry, the value of outstanding positions—also called open interest in the derivatives segment—has increased for the FIIs in the Nifty futures. The FIIs' long-to-short ratio in index futures remains at 16%:84%.

The FIIs sold index options worth Rs 22,612.25 crore and index futures worth Rs 2,186.85 crore. They sold stock futures worth Rs 3,452.89 crore and stock options worth Rs 5,086.76 crore.

FII Contract Value

The value of the total Nifty 50 futures open interest in the market increased by Rs 1,515.3 crore at the end of January expiry from Rs 30,743.5 crore a day earlier to Rs 32,258.8 crore.

F&O Cues

The Nifty January futures were down by 0.46% to 23,671.10 at a premium of 110.25 points, with the open interest up by 5.52%.

The open interest distribution for the Nifty 50 Jan. 16 expiry series indicated most activity at 26,500 call strikes, with the 22,500 put strikes having maximum open interest.

Long-Short Ratio

The total long-short ratio for foreign investors fell to 1.20 from 1.21 in the previous session.
