Stock markets in India will remain closed on Thursday, April 10, on account of Mahavir Jayanti — a significant religious festival commemorating the birth of Lord Mahavira, the 24th and last Tirthankara of Jainism.

Mahavir Jayanti is a public holiday in several states, including Maharashtra. As the state has declared it a public holiday, the Mumbai-based stock exchanges—the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE—will also remain closed tomorrow.

Trading in equity derivatives, securities lending and borrowing (SLB), currency derivatives, and electronic gold receipts (EGR) will remain suspended on April 10.

This will be the first festival-based holiday for the stock exchanges in April. For context, the markets are already closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Although Ram Navami fell on April 6, it coincided with a Sunday — a regular market holiday — so no additional holiday was observed.

According to Jain tradition, Lord Mahavira is a revered spiritual teacher and an important religious figure. On this day, devotees participate in spiritual processions and gatherings held at Jain temples across the country.
