India's stock benchmarks closed little unchanged in a volatile session as gains in capital goods and industrials stocks were offset by losses in energy, oil and gas and metals.
The Sensex closed 37 points, or 0.06%, higher at 58,803.33. The Nifty 50 closed flat at 17,539.45.
Of the Nifty 50 constituents, 15 stocks fell and 35 rose.
ITC Ltd., Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd., HDFC Ltd., Larsen & Toubro Ltd. and banking stocks gained. Bharat Petroleum Corp., Shree Cement Ltd., Hero MotoCorp Ltd., Hindalco Industries Ltd. and Oil & Natural Gas Corp. were among the top laggards.
The mid-cap index underperformed its larger peers, while the small-cap gauge mirrored the Sensex and Nifty 50.
Thirteen of the 19 sectoral indices compiled by BSE Ltd. declined, with oil and gas, and energy losing nearly 1%. Capital goods index gained more than 1%.
The market breadth was skewed in favour of the bulls. About 1,776 stocks rose, 1,648 fell and 143 remained unchanged.
