India's stock benchmarks swung to gains in a volatile session, aided by a rise in capital goods, industrials, real estate, and telecom stocks. The rise comes amid a lockdown in Chengdu, China; a recovery in U.S. markets ahead of Friday's jobs data; and a slide in crude oil prices.
The Sensex gained 100 points or 0.18% to 58,870.91 on the BSE. The Nifty 50 advanced over 0.1% to 17,565.10 on the NSE. Among Nifty 50 constituents, 27 stocks rose while 23 fell. Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd., Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd., Larsen & Toubro Ltd., HDFC Life Insurance Company Ltd., and ITC Ltd. were among the top Nifty gainers.
The broader indices outperformed their larger peers, with mid and small cap indices rising over 0.3%. Fourteen of the 19 sectoral indices compiled by BSE Ltd advanced, with industrials and capital goods gauges gaining over 1%.
The market breadth is skewed in favour of the bulls. About 1,920 stocks rose, 1,381 fell, and 151 remained unchanged.
