The Nifty ended 3.5% higher month-on-month at 17,759 in August 2022, closing higher for the second consecutive month. The Nifty is up 2.3% in CY22 year-to-date. The Nifty midcap 100 (up 6.2% month-on-month) and Nifty smallcap 100 (up 4.9%) outperformed the Nifty-50 during the month.
Russia MICEX (up 12%), Brazil (up 6%), India (up 4%), Indonesia (up 3%), Japan (up 1%), Korea (up 1%), Taiwan (up 1%) ended higher in local currency terms. However, the U.S. (down 4%), the UK (down 2%), and China (down 2%) ended lower. Over the last 12 months, the MSCI India index (up 4%) has outperformed the MSCI EM index (down 24%).
Foreign institutional investors clocked the highest inflows since Januar 2021 at $6.8 billion in August 2022; year-to-date'CY22 outflows stood at $20.9 billion. Domestic institutional investors turn sellers of $0.9 billion in Aug-22 after 17 months of buying; year-to-date'CY22 inflows stood at $27.2 billion.
