Tamil Nadu Govt Formation: Vijay To Take Oath As CM On May 7? Congress Backs TVK, May Get Two Portfolios

TVK emerged as the single largest party in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, winning 108 seats. However, the magic number for a simple majority stands at 118, leaving Vijay at least 10 seats short.

Actor-turned-politician Vijay is on the cusp of becoming Tamil Nadu's next Chief Minister, with his swearing-in ceremony likely to take place on Thursday, even as his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) scrambles to finalise the coalition arithmetic that will carry it across the majority line.

TVK emerged as the single largest party in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, winning 108 seats. However, the magic number for a simple majority stands at 118, leaving Vijay at least 10 seats short. The Congress, which won five seats, holds potential kingmaker status alongside the PMK with four, and the CPI and CPI-M with two seats each.

Confirming has confirmed the decision to back TVK. Congress MP Sasikanth Senthil told NDTV, “Yes, the Political Affairs Committee has authorised the TNCC to support TVK in government formation.”

According to sources, Congress is likely to secure two ministerial berths in the new government.

The party, however, sources said, has placed a key precondition — TVK must not align with the NDA or its allies, including the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Here are the key updates related to TVK's government formation in the state:

Swearing-In On May 7?

As per reports, Vijay is set to be sworn in as Chief Minister on May 7. The swearing-in will, reportedly, be held at Nehru Indoor Stadium, with more than 5,000 people invited to the ceremony.

Congress Confirms Vijay's Outreach

Senior Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, and Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar — convened at Kharge's residence Tuesday evening to deliberate on the political situation.

Addressing reporters after the meeting, Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal confirmed the outreach, saying the party had discussed Tamil Nadu's post-election scenario at length. He stated that the mandate in the state was unmistakably one for a secular government, "committed to protecting the Constitution in letter and spirit."

Venugopal also stressed the Congress's firm opposition to any backdoor influence from the BJP, saying the party was "determined not to allow the BJP and its proxies to run the government of Tamil Nadu in any manner."

Stalin Resigns, Ending DMK's Reign

MK Stalin resigned as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on Tuesday, with his resignation letter sent to the office of Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. The move came after a stunning electoral defeat — Stalin also lost his own Kolathur constituency seat to TVK's MLA-elect VS Babu. The DMK, which had swept to power with 159 seats in 2021, was reduced to a distant third-place finish.

AIADMK's Edappadi Reportedly in Talks With Vijay

In a potentially significant back-channel development, AIADMK MLA-elect Leemarose Martin claimed that party general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami was in talks to provide support to Vijay's TVK to form a stable government.

A TVK-AIADMK arrangement, combining their 108 and 47 seats respectively, would offer a comfortable majority and potentially greater internal stability, despite ideological differences between the parties.

Vijay Likely To Resign From Trichy (East)

Vijay is likely to resign from the Tiruchirappalli (East) Assembly seat he won in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, NDTV reported, citing sources on Tuesday. He is expected to retain his Perambur constituency seat.

TVK, founded by Vijay only in February 2024 after years of political signalling through his fan network, had contested all 234 seats alone on a platform of secularism, social justice, and anti-corruption. Its stunning debut performance upended Tamil Nadu's decades-old two-party dynamic dominated by the DMK and the AIADMK.

The TNCC's decision is expected shortly, and could be pivotal in determining whether the former box-office superstar makes the transition to Tamil Nadu's highest office.
