Ramadan or Ramzan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. It is a sacred period of fasting, prayer, and reflection observed by millions of Muslims in India and around the world. The holy month of Ramadan started in India on Feb. 19 after the crescent moon was sighted. In a few countries, such as Saudi Arabia, the month began a day earlier. 

During the holy month, Muslims worldwide observe a stringent fast from dawn to dusk on a daily basis. Each day of Ramadan starts with Sehri, the pre-dawn meal, and concludes with Iftar, the evening meal at sunset. These two moments mark the rhythm of the fast and symbolise both discipline and gratitude.

This is the time when Muslims gather with family and friends to observe fasting by follow precise timings that vary slightly depending on location.

Considered a blessed practice, Sehri offers nourishment and strength for the day ahead. On the other hand, Iftaar is a time of joy and usually starts with dates and water. 

It is important to have a balanced meal for Sehri as this ensures energy throughout the day, since Muslims refrain from eating and drinking anything, including water, while observing fast.

They break the fast with dates and water, followed by a proper meal.

The timings for Iftar and Sehri differ from one city to another and are based on the sighting of the moon and the sunrise. Here's taking a look at the timings for various cities in India:

New Delhi: Sehri - 5:34 a.m. I Iftar- 6:17 p.m.

Hyderabad: Sehri - 5:25 a.m. I Iftar- 6:22 p.m.

Mumbai Sehri- 5:44 a.m. I Iftar- 6:41 p.m.

Bengaluru Sehri - 5:27 a.m. I Iftar- 6:28 p.m.

Srinagar Sehri - 5:44 a.m. I Iftar- 6:22 p.m.

Lucknow Sehri - 5:19 a.m. I Iftar - 6:04 p.m.

Chennai Sehri - 05:16 a.m. I Iftar - 6:17 p.m.

Kolkata Sehri - 04:46 a.m. I Iftar - 5:37 p.m.

Significance Of Ramadan 

During the holy month of Ramadan, fasting is considered one of the five pillars of Islam. Also, this marks the period when the holy Qur'an was first revealed to the Prophet Mohammad. 

Fasting during this time improves mental discipline and spiritual growth. 

The month of Ramadan lasts for 29 to 30 days. It ends with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, one of the major festivals in the Islamic calendar.
