(Bloomberg) -- Prime Minister Theresa May said businesses are “positive” about the opportunities created by Britain leaving the European Union as they seek to make the best out of the change.
A series of meetings with business leaders and investors has shown her that companies have accepted the decision by British voters in the June 23 referendum and want to move on, she said in a round of media interviews on Tuesday morning during her Conservative Party's annual conference in Birmingham, central England.
“They're now saying the British people have given their verdict, the government is going to take the United Kingdom out of the European Union, let's look to see what opportunities we can bring together, what we can do for the future, to ensure continued investment, continued trade and continued jobs growth here in the U.K.,” May told BBC Radio 5. “There's a real constructive, positive feeling of going out there and making sure we're getting the right deal.”
May, who opposed withdrawal from the bloc before the referendum, said her government's role is to “make the best of it” and deliver on the result of the vote. She warned, though, that there will be “bumps in the road” during the period of negotiation before Britain leaves.
