Kanpur police on Tuesday arrested five doctors for their alleged involvement in an illegal kidney transplant racket that was operating across several private hospitals in the city, according to NDTV.

Meanwhile, a manhunt is underway for four other doctors believed to be the masterminds behind the nefarious operation.

Police said the accused doctors, along with six others, performed illegal kidney transplant surgeries on at least 40 people, including foreign nationals.

he racket is suspected to have a wider network extending to multiple cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and even across the border to Nepal.

The illegal surgeries were done on at least 40 people, including foreigners, by the doctor and six others.

Kanpur Police Commissioner Raghuveer Lal stated that the racket was allegedly spread to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and even Nepal, and a total of 40 to 50 illegal transplants were carried out.

The matter came to light after Ayush, an MBA student from Samastipur in Bihar, informed the police that he sold one of his kidneys for Rs 10 lakh after financial distress, but was cheated by the doctors who didn't pay the promised amount.

The racket operated on a massive profit margin — as those involved allegedly bought kidneys for Rs 10 lakh and sold them for Rs 60 lakh. The organ scam was revealed due to a Rs 50,000 payment dispute with a student who had sold them his kidney.

After the surgery, Ayush's condition was serious. Both the patient and Ayush were rescued from hospital premises by the police during the probe.

An ambulance driver, Shivam Agarwal, used social media platforms like Telegram to tempt economically deprived youth.

Acting on these leads, the police and health department launched joint raids late Monday night across three facilities in the Kalyanpur area, Ahuja Hospital, Priya Hospital, and Med Life Hospital.
