(Bloomberg) -- Denmark will remove the last of its virus restrictions after the Nordic country's hospitals proved able to handle a surge in cases, the Jyllands-Posten newspaper reported, citing people in the government it didn't identify.
The change is coming as Denmark registers record numbers of daily virus infections as current curbs fail to keep the variant in check. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is due to unveil a plan to end the lockdown on Wednesday at a presentation in Copenhagen, according to the newspaper.
Denmark, a country of 5.8 million people, has registered almost 1.5 million infections during the two-year pandemic, of which 1 million have come in the last two months alone. Jyllands-Posten said the government will also re-classify Covid-19 as a disease that no longer poses a threat to the society. The restrictions will be phased out as of Jan. 31, according to the newspaper.
Denmark's current restrictions include limited opening hours for restaurants and bars and the use of face masks in stores and at some indoor events.
