Cyclone Fengal: The deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm on Wednesday leading to heavy to very heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The weather agency in its latest bulletin said that the deep depression is very likely to move north-northwestwards and intensify further into a cyclonic storm, Cyclone Fengal, in the next 12 hours.
The Deep Depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal currently lies 550 km south-southeast of Chennai, according to IMD.
“The Deep Depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of 13 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centred at 0830 hours IST of today, the 27th November 2024 over the same region near latitude 8.5°N and longitude 82.3°E, about 120 km east-southeast of Trincomalee, 370 km southeast of Nagappattinam, 470 km southeast of Puducherry and 550 km south-southeast of Chennai.” the IMD said in a bulletin at 11:10 am on Nov. 27.
“It is very likely to continue to move north-northwestwards and intensify further into a cyclonic storm during next 12 hours. Thereafter, it will continue to move north-northwestwards towards Tamil Nadu coast skirting Sri Lanka coast during subsequent 2 days” it added.

November 27, 2024Heavy Rainfall Alert
The IMD issued a red alert for several districts in Tamil Nadu on November 27. It predicted heavy to very heavy rain at a few places with extremely heavy rain at one or two places over the Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai districts and Karaikal area.
On Nov. 27, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in some places in the districts of Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengelpet, and Cuddalore and authorities declared holiday for schools and colleges in select regions including Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai.
Heavy Rainfall in Chennai
An orange alert has been issued for Chennai and a few other districts on Nov. 27. “Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Pudukkottai districts and Puducherry,” IMD said.
Due to the rains, heavy traffic congestion was witnessed in many areas including the arterial OMR Road and traffic flow was affected in several areas as roads came under sheets of water. Also, in Chennai, there was delay in the landing of seven flights.
Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin following his inspection of city areas here, advised officials to continue the maintenance work so that inundation could be prevented. Work to desilt canals is continuing as part of the maintenance.

Schools Closed, CM Chairs Meeting
The authorities in several districts, including Tiruchirappalli, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Tiruvarur, have issued orders to close schools and colleges on Wednesday due to heavy rain alert.
Tamil Nadu | Due to continuous rainfall in the district, Tiruchirappalli District Collector Pradeep Kumar has announced a holiday for all schools & colleges in the district today.
November 27, 2024Government-aided schools and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal will also be closed on November 27.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin chaired a high-level meeting to take stock of the preparedness for the cyclone.
Airlines issue travel advisory
Private carrier IndiGo also issued an advisory regarding the situation.
“ Due to adverse weather conditions, flights to/from #Chennai, #Tuticorin, and #Madurai continue to be impacted, while #Tiruchirappalli and #Salem might now also be affected. Please stay updated on your flight status,” it said.

What is Cyclone Fengal?
Cyclone Fengal, is a name proposed by Saudi Arabia, in line with the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) guidelines on naming cyclones. This is the third cyclonic storm of the 2024 North Indian Ocean cyclone season.
