Panic gripped Punjab after two blast-like incidents were reported within hours in Amritsar and Jalandhar on Tuesday night, putting the state on high alert.

In Jaladhar, a scooter parked outside the Border Security Force's Punjab Frontier (BSF) headquarters suddenly caught fire and exploded. Whereas  a blast occured in Khasa near the cantonment area in Amritsar at around 10:50 am on Tuesday

The incident in Jalandhar occurred on a busy arterial road connecting the main city to the Amritsar-Delhi highway, prompting immediate concern among commuters and residents.

Police, Army, and forensic teams reached the spot and secured the area.

While official reports are focusing on the blaze itself, local witnesses claimed the fire was preceded by a sharp, blast-like sound emanating from the vehicle. The investigation has intensified with the arrival of specialized units, including a forensic team, a dog squad, and a bomb disposal unit.

However, police confirmed that no injuries were reported in the incident and that preliminary findings point to a localized vehicle fire. "Prima facie, the facts are that an Activa parked here caught fire," Commissioner Kaur stated, cited by PTI, noting that the investigation is still in its early stages.

Authorities have identified the owner of the vehicle as 22-year-old Gurpreet Singh, who reportedly uses the scooter for daily parcel deliveries in the area.

According to a relative at the scene, Singh was returning to the parked vehicle on Tuesday evening when it suddenly erupted in flames. Shaken by the incident, the young man immediately contacted his father to report the fire.

The gravity of the situation brought Police Commissioner Kaur and several senior officials to the spot to personally oversee the investigation and assess any potential security implications, given the location's proximity to the BSF headquarters.

Politics Over Explosion

The incident has quickly escalated into a political flashpoint, with opposition leaders citing it as evidence of a deteriorating security situation in the border state.

Amrinder Singh Raja Warring characterised the event as a deeply alarming "explosion," and said in a post on X, "The explosion near the Border Security Force headquarters in Jalandhar is deeply alarming. A blast in a delivery scooter in a crowded area exposes a serious collapse of law and order. Punjab is a sensitive border state—such incidents raise grave national security concerns. Yet, while the @AAPPunjab government is busy parading its MLAs before the President, the @BJP4India-led Centre is equally distracted and failing in its responsibility to ensure security. People deserve safety, not political theatre."
