The process to get Aadhaar biometrics updated for children aged 5 to 17 years remains free until Sept. 30. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), which oversees Aadhaar related initiatives, is urging parents and guardians to ensure that children complete their Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) on time.
"Complete Mandatory Biometric Updates of children when they reach the age of 5 and 15, this will help them verify their identity during admissions, examinations, and scholarship applications. It is free of cost till 30th September. Don't miss this chance, visit your nearest Aadhaar Centre to update MBU now!" Aadhaar posted across its social media profiles.
As per the rules, children are required to mandatorily update their biometrics in Aadhaar once they turn 5 and then again at 15. This ensures that their Aadhaar details remain accurate and their identity can be verified smoothly.
The unique 12-digit "Aadhaar" identity numbers are issued to all Indian residents for verification purposes for different government policies. For students, Aadhaar is typically used in school admissions, examinations, scholarship applications and access to government schemes.

The mandatory biometric update for children can be done free of cost at Aadhaar centres across India until Sept. 30. After the deadline, authorities may decide whether to extend the free update facility and charges could apply if the waiver is not continued.
So far, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has completed around 2 crore biometric updates for schoolchildren across the country. The special drive, launched in September last year, has also reached more than 1.56 lakh schools.
Why Is Biometrics Update Needed?
Aadhaar enrolment for children below five years captures only demographic details and a photograph. So in young children, fingerprints and iris scans are not recorded as these biometrics are still developing.
This is why children are required to complete their mandatory biometric update once they turn five and again 15. To ensure the initiative reaches maximum children, the UIDAI has waived charges for children aged 7 to 15 from Oct. 1, 2025, for one year.

It also urged parents and guardians to complete the update within the free period and avoid last-minute delays.
