Congress President Rahul Gandhi tendered an unconditional apology in the Supreme Court on Wednesday, for wrongfully attributing the 'chowkidar chor hai' remark to the apex court in relation to the Rafale case.
Gandhi used the remark against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in relation to the April 10 verdict on the sale of 36 Rafale aircraft, in the heat of political campaigning at a rally in Amethi. On April 22 he had filed an affidavit with the Supreme Court expressing regret over his remarks which the apex court had said was "incorrectly attributed" to the institution.
In a fresh three-page affidavit today, the Congress chief said he holds the Supreme Court in the "highest esteem and respect", and sought closure of the criminal contempt proceedings filed against him by member of Parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party Meenakshi Lekhi.
"The deponent (Rahul Gandhi) unconditionally apologises for the wrongful attributions to this court," Gandhi said in his affidavit.
The Supreme Court is set to hold a joint hearing on Rahul Gandhi's contempt case and a review petition on the Rafale verdict, on May 10.
