India's utility-scale solar power capacity additions surged by roughly 55% Y-o-Y to 28.6 gigawatts in the 2025. This is on the back of faster project completion owing to the ISTS waiver deadline ending and several long-pending projects getting commissioned.

India's renewable energy installed capacity came close to 258 GW in the previous calendar year, according to a report by JMK Research & Analytics, with solar energy contributing around 53%, trailed by wind at 21%, large hydro (20%), bio power (4%), and small hydro at 2%.

India saw its highest-ever annual renewable energy additions in CY2025, adding close to 37.9 GW of solar and 6.3 GW of wind capacity. Solar capacity increased by 54.7% compared to the previous calendar year, while wind installations saw a notable 85.3% increase, as per the report.

“The significant increase in utility-scale solar capacity this year is primarily due to the commissioning of the long pending tenders awarded by various central and state agencies to the RE developers. Swift project execution due to the ISTS waiver deadline encouraged developers to fast-track installation activities, thereby acting as an additional factor,” JMK Research & Analytics added.

The open access sector drove India's renewable energy growth in 2025, accounting for over 38% of utility-scale solar installations. Domestic module and cell manufacturing also boosted solar growth, pushing cumulative capacity to cross 200 GW by December 2025.

India added 7.9 GW of rooftop solar capacity in 2025, up 72% from 2024, with 60% of installations coming in the second half of the year. The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana spurred this growth, says JMK Research & Analytics. In contrast, off-grid solar additions dipped 8.8% to 1.35 GW.

In wind energy, 6.3 GW of new capacity was added in 2025, nearly twice the 3.4 GW added in 2024, led by open-access projects (60-70% of installations).

Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu accounted for 83.7% of solar and wind installations. Gujarat topped the list with 11.1 GW, followed by Rajasthan (10.2 GW) and Maharashtra (9.7 GW).
