India's exports grew 5.37% year-on-year to $27.24 billion in January, mainly driven by healthy growth in pharmaceuticals and engineering sectors, according to provisional data released by the commerce ministry.

Imports during the month rose 2% to $42 billion, leaving a trade deficit of $14.75 billion, the data showed.

  • Exports of pharmaceuticals grew 16.4% to $293 million.

  • Exports of engineering goods jumped 19% to $1.16 billion.

The country's trade deficit stood at $15.4 billion in December, with $27.15 of exports and $42.59 billion of exports.
