Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday directed top tax officials to simplify the GST registration process, expedite the closure of tax investigations, and strengthen redressal mechanisms during the first day of the CBIC conclave.

Highlighting the need for a simpler, seamless, and transparent GST registration system, the Finance Minister urged for the use of technology and risk-based parameters to streamline registrations and reduce delays.

She also called for the speedy closure of investigations related to Customs and CGST cases, emphasising a thorough analysis to bridge the gap between tax detection and recovery. Preventing tax evasion and curbing wrongful Input Tax Credit (ITC) claims were also underscored as priorities.

During the conclave, CBIC officials presented notable performance metrics, including a rise in GST audit coverage to 88.74% in FY 2024–25, and detection of ₹2.23 lakh crore in GST evasion. Voluntary payments towards evasion stood at ₹28,909 crore, with no taxpayers subjected to audit more than once within three years. Additionally, 85% of GST refund claims were processed within the statutory 60-day timeframe.

The Finance Minister's directives aim to further enhance taxpayer experience, reduce compliance burdens, and boost the efficiency of India's indirect tax administration as the CBIC continues to strengthen its role in driving ease of doing business.
