Dharavi Records 25 New Coronavirus Cases, Total Tally At 1,378

Coronavirus cases continue to mount in Dharavi as tiny slum shanties are fertile ground for the highly contagious pathogen.

Asia's most crowded slum recorded 25 fresh Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, taking the total tally to 1,378, according to data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. That just as India further relaxed a nationwide lockdown to boost economic activities.

Among the latest to test positive are women aged between 27 and 73 years and men aged between 32 and 75 years, said Kiran Dighavkar, assistant commissioner in charge of the G/North Ward in Central Mumbai.

So far, 56 people in Dharavi—a sprawl of shanties spread over 240 hectares with a population of 8.5 lakh and over 13,000 small businesses—have succumbed to the virus.

Of the 25 fresh cases reported today:

  • Six were from Matunga Labour Camp
  • Three from Azad Nagar
  • Two each from 60 Feet Road, Uttar Bhartiya Society, Kalpataru CHS, 90 Feet Road and Dharavi Cross Road
  • One each from Dr. Baliga Nagar, Indira Nagar, Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, Transit Camp, Ramasethu Chawl and Kamla Nehru Nagar

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Maharashtra now has 37,136 confirmed coronavirus cases. India's total count stands at 1,01,139.
