Coronavirus infections in India continue to race ahead, with over a lakh new cases added every two days.
India added nearly 64,000 cases in a matter of 24 hours, taking the total tally to 24.6 lakh in the world’s third-worst infected country, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Aug. 14. This includes over 48,000 deaths and more than 17.5 lakh patients who have recovered.
Friday marked the seventh time India reported over 60,000 cases in a day.
Key figures:
- Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 24,61,190
- Active cases: 6,61,595
- Cured/discharged/migrated: 17,51,555
- Deaths: 48,040
- Fresh cases in 24 hours: 64,553
- One-day recoveries: 55573
- One-day deaths: 1,007
This is the fourth time that India has reported over a 1,000 deaths in a 24-hour period.
India’s recovery rate has swelled to nearly 70%, while the case fatality rate has fallen below 2% for the first time since the lockdown was imposed on March 25, the health ministry said on Tuesday.
However, despite the low rate, India’s fatalities are the fourth largest in the world. The country is now only behind the U.S., Brazil and Mexico in the overall number of deaths. Its total number of confirmed cases, almost 2.4 million, is the third largest in the world.
Global Update
New Zealand recorded 12 new confirmed local cases of the coronavirus on Friday, including some outside the largest city Auckland, as the government attempts to stamp out the nation’s first outbreak in more than three months.
Joe Biden said U.S. governors should require masks for the next three months, an approach he said would save more than 40,000 lives. President Donald Trump countered that it would be unenforceable.
The U.K. eased lockdown rules but said there will be tougher penalties for violators. The nation also imposed quarantines on travelers from France, the Netherlands and four other countries.
Globally, total cases topped 20.7 million with over 752,000 dead.
