Active Covid-19 cases dropped marginally in India, after three straight days of increase, amid concerns of a renewed spread of the pandemic.

India reported over 41,000 new cases in 24 hours, taking the total tally over 93.5 lakh in the world’s second-worst infected country, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Nov. 28. That includes nearly 87.6 lakh recoveries and more than 1.36 lakh deaths.

Authorities reported 41,452 recoveries in a day, that was marginally higher than fresh cases, causing active cases to fall. Active cases stood above 4.5 lakh, a sharp drop from 10-lakh tally crossed in mid-September.

Key Figures

  • Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 93,51,109
  • Active cases: 4,54,940
  • Cured/discharged/migrated: 87,59,969
  • Deaths: 1,36,200
  • Number of fresh cases in 24 hours: 41,322
  • One-day recoveries: 41,452
  • One-day deaths: 485

The threat of a second wave comes at a time when most western countries are dealing with renewed rise in infections and consequently restrictions, albeit not at the same level as seen earlier this year. India remains the country with second highest confirmed Covid-19 cases in the world, behind the U.S. which has around 36 lakh more cases.

India’s Covid-19 tally is likely to top a crore in mid-December.

Global Update

The U.S. reported more than 200,000 new coronavirus infections for the first time following the Thanksgiving break. South Korea posted more than 500 cases for a third day, while countries including Japan and the Philippines made progress with their vaccine plans.

Ireland, the first western European country to reimpose a lockdown, will begin to ease coronavirus curbs. Italy will also ease restrictions in the financial hub of Milan and four other areas.

Globally, cases exceeded 61.5 million with more than 1.4 million dead.
