US stocks are opening mixed on disappointing news about the US economy.

The Dow Jones industrial average is down 21 points to 12,909 in the opening minutes of trading. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 is down 2 points to 1,380. The Nasdaq is faring better, up 6 points to 3,053.

A measurement of small-business optimism fell after six months of gains and U.S. wholesale businesses slowed their pace for restocking shelves.

The Dow and the S&P have both been falling for four straight days, pushed down by a disappointing jobs report and signs that the Federal Reserve doesn't plan to restart its bond-buying program.

If the market closes down Tuesday, it will be the longest losing streak so far this year.
