A US team of negotiators will be in New Delhi from June 4-10, led by Assistant US Trade Representative Brendan Lynch, extending their visit that was supposed to end June 6 earlier, according to sources.
The American team in town is here for another round of trade talks for the Bilateral Trade Agreement between India and the US. "Ongoing negotiations aim to achieve an expeditious, mutually beneficial conclusion of initial tranche of BTA," the people quoted above said, on the condition of anonymity.
The talks are based around an "integrated, strategic approach", with the talks focused on facilitating greater market access, reducing tariff and non-tariff barriers, and enhancing supply chain resilience and integration.
A number of visits – at least one each month – have taken place as Indian and American teams have shuttled between Washington and New Delhi. A first tranche of the deal is expected to be signed between July 4 and July 9, as nations make a beeline to the US to avoid any adverse impact of the 90-day tariff pause ending on July 9.
During the India-U.S. Leaders' Summit on Feb. 13, 2025, both nations reaffirmed their commitment to deepening trade ties with a new ambition, aiming to more than double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030.
To realise this vision, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US Vice President JD Vance had announced plans to negotiate the first tranche of a mutually beneficial, multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) by September-October this year.
