Tata Motors Ltd. on Thursday said it is investigating the incident of a Nexon EV catching fire in Mumbai, videos of which are circulating on social media.

"A detailed investigation is currently being conducted to ascertain the facts of the recent, isolated thermal incident that is doing the rounds on social media," the Tata Group company said in a statement. "We will share a detailed response after our complete investigation. We remain committed to the safety of our vehicles and their users."

According to the company, this is the first instance of a Nexon EV catching fire, after more than 30,000 units sold in the past four years.

This, however, isn't an isolated incident for the wider EV industry. Electric two-wheeler makers -- such as Ola Electric, Okinawa Autotech and PureEV -- have recalled their electric scooters in the wake of separate fire incidents.

The government has formed a panel to examine such incidents and warned companies of penalties if they were found to be negligent.
